JULY 2017: KUALA GANDAH ELEPHANT SANCTUARY
If you haven’t heard the news, a baby elephant was killed on Gerik-Jeli highway last Friday (16/6/2017). Read the news here:
This is an unfortunate tragedy but in retrospect, it shows that we still have wild elephant populations in Peninsular Malaysia. In fact, Malaysia has one of the highest potential for conserving wild elephants in South East Asia. Our problem is, as Malaysian population continues to grow and along with that comes the pressure of development, human-elephant conflicts will occur. It is our ability to coexist with wild elephants that will be the key to their survival.
Why should we care about elephants? How can we live together with them?
If you are intrigued by these questions and would like to know more about elephants, come join our July Monthly Meet at the National Elephant Conservation Centre (NECC)!
The NECC is set up to carry out translocation of elephants and to educate the public on elephant conservation issues. During this meet, we are lucky to have researchers from Management and Ecology of Malaysian Elephants (MEME) to talk about the research behind conservation of wild elephants in Peninsular Malaysia.
So, to avoid disappointment, register early to grab your seats as places are limited. People from all walks of life and age are welcomed to join. Take this chance to find out more about our gentle giants of the jungle.
